Apraksts

The Stadium of Nemea was constructed according to the whole reconstruction program of the wider area of Nemea, conceived by macedonian king Phillip II and his successors between 330 - 300 B.C.

This is the place where the Nemean Games were held in honor of them mythological baby Opheltes. Participants and visitors flooded the area to attend the celebrations and games. The proccession arrived to the stadium from the Sanctuary of Zeus which was approximately 400 metres away.

A large number of spectators were seated at the ancient stadium although limited stone seats existed along the west side of the track. The earth was so soft that it allowed the seats to be carved into the rock. Thus 40.000 people were accomodated within the stadium except for the north side, where no seating arrangements were ever made concidering the results of the excavation.

To the southeast of the stadium the Hellanodikai were seated in a special section as to stand out from the rest of the attendants, watch the races unhindered and come to a judgment.

The length of the track was 178 metres, its edges covered by a stone - water - channel with an addition of stone basins for drinking water and watering the terrain to keep dust on the ground, to facilitate the atletes' effort. Successful efforts resulted to a crown of celery placed on the athlete's head.

The athletes, judges and trainers walked into the stadium after exiting the vaulted tunnel that communicated with the western side of the stadium area where the "Apodyteria" (changing room or locker room) were located. Although the tunnel was originally covered up in debris, the excavation brought to light the particularity of this vault which is the earliest of ancient Greece (320 B.C). Scratches against the wall are preserved, probably while the athletes waited to be called for.
